Egyptian Explorer

Egypt, probably the world’s oldest civilization, is a treasure trove for history and archaeology enthusiasts.
Introduction

Egypt is rich with temples: soaring lotus-bud columns, enormous stone portals laced with delicate carvings, elaborate underground tombs, windswept desert monasteries, and richly decorated mosques. But as extraordinary as these sights are, they will probably not be the things that linger in your memory after you return home. It is the rhythm of life in Egypt—from the Mediterranean feel of Alexandria to the electric pace of Cairo to the timelessness of desert villages—that is unforgettable.

The Itinerary

Cairo

Saturday. Welcome to the land of the Pharaohs! At Cairo airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax.

Overnight: Cairo

Cairo

Today, we visit the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza Plateau. Sole survivors from the ancient Greek-listed Seven Wonders of the World. Gaze in awe at the largest of the three great pyramids – Cheops, constructed from over 2.5 million limestone blocks it took more than 20 years to construct. Afterwards we enjoy a camel ride across the desert sands.

Overnight: Cairo | Breakfast

Cairo – Aswan

Today, we venture in search of the treasures of King Tutankhamen, mummies and more at the Egyptian Museum. Later we tour the Islamic Citadel of Saladin with views looking down over the old city, watching people go about their daily life. We conclude the day with a market walk through the bustling Khan el-Khalili bazaar. Time to freshen up, this evening we take the comfortable overnight sleeper train to Aswan.

Overnight: Sleeper Cabin Train | Breakfast, Dinner

Aswan

We arrive into Aswan this morning and explore the Nubian city on a guided walk of the local market and souq. Scenically located on the Nile, a walk along the riverfront corniche to view the many boats is a real treat, as is Aswan bazaar. Free afternoon.

Overnight: Aswan | Breakfast

Aswan

Free morning or opt for the morning excursion to Abu Simbel. The remainder of the afternoon at leisure; maybe relax by the pool, take a stroll along the Nile corniche or explore the lively market place.

Overnight: Aswan | Breakfast

Aswan – Luxor

This morning we board a motor boat and cruise along the River Nile, passing some of the small islands en route to Sahal island, where we disembark and visit a local village and school before enjoying lunch at the home of an Egyptian family. The motor boats of Aswan are proudly owned and crewed by friendly local sailors and they have been adapted from a felucca style of vessel to comfortably carry travelers. Lunch will be served in the home of an Egyptian family. After lunch we cruise back to Aswan for our afternoon/evening train journey to Luxor, one of the world’s greatest open-air museums. The 4000 year old site of ancient Thebes, known today as Luxor, is our base for the next three days.

Overnight: Luxor | Breakfast, Lunch

Luxor

At sunrise today we have the option to go hot air ballooning before we visit Karnak Temple. More than a temple, Karnak is a spectacular complex of sanctuaries, pylons, statuettes and obelisks. Built on a grand scale, Karnak is probably Egypt’s finest ancient temple. Free afternoon or wander along Luxor’s historic waterfront. This evening, we travel in horse-drawn carriages to the illuminated Temple of Luxor where we enjoy a tour in the cool evening air. Rest of evening free.

Overnight: Luxor | Breakfast

Luxor

Early this morning we head to the West Bank of the Nile for a guided tour of the legendary Valleys of the Kings. Attempting to confound thieves and grave robbers, the New Kingdom pharaohs awaiting their passage into the after-life were secretly entombed with their worldly wealth in the cliffs of the valley. The cliffs, bereft of vegetation are home to a vast necropolis of tombs, some of which you can enter. Some of the tombs are so well preserved that the colors of the incredible pharaonic friezes are still as vibrant as when they were first painted.

After leaving the Valley of the Kings and saying goodbye to our tour guide we return to our hotel, where there will be a little time to freshen up before hotel check out and onward departure transfer to Luxor international Airport. Our tour concludes at this point with fond memories of a magical family holiday to Egypt!

Breakfast

Note: Flights departing Luxor can be reserved anytime after 1.30pm today.
